This week’s post features JAMES BLUNT with the song SHOULD I GIVE IT ALL UP!

In this song-based STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLAN for ENGLISH language TEACHING, students MAKE CONNECTIONS with words, PLAY an open the box game and WRITE word connections, EXPLAIN word connections from other groups, LISTEN to the song and identify sentences with the words, TALK about the song in pairs, WATCH the music video and TALK about it.
OBS: This lesson plan was made for ONLINE TEACHING, but it can be modified for face-to-face instruction, as well.
Language level: B1+ and above Learner type: All ages Skills: speaking, reading, listening and writing Topic: Connections Language/grammar: feelings, explaining and giving reasons Materials: YouTube video, google slide Duration: 1 hour Downloadable materials: instructions; google slides
STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLAN
Step 1 + step 2 (15 – 20 min)
Ask your students: What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word MUSIC?
Have some students answer and explain their answers. Then, tell them they’re going to make word connections as a group.
Divide the class into small groups (no more than 4 groups).
Instructions: screen-share the activity Open The Box from Wordwall.net.
One student from group A chooses a number (1-4), and you open that box number to reveal one of the words from the song. Then, all students from the group have to write – in the chat box – the first word related to that word that comes to their minds (each student writes just one word in the chat box).
When all students from group A have written their words, the students from another group have to explain the possible connections and associations between those words and the word in the activity.
Next, have a student from group B choose another number, and now, the students from his/her group write one word in the chat box. Another group talks about the relationships or meanings of the associations. Do the same for the other words.
Step 3 (10 min)
Tell your students that you’re going to play the song for them. Their task is to identify the words from step 2 in the song and write down the sentences they hear with them. Play the song twice.
Step 4 (5 min)
Students send their sentences in the chat box. Paste them on the board. Correct grammar and spelling mistakes.
Step 5 (5 min)
Screen-share the slide with the lyrics. Have students read and check the sentences they wrote. Help with the vocabulary.
Step 6 (7 min)
In pairs, students answer questions about the song (slide 2). They must justify their answers with the words from the lyrics.
Who is singing? (a man, a woman, a friend, a father, etc.) What is happening in the song or what happened? Where? When? How is the singer feeling? Why?
Step 7 (7 min)
Students share their ideas.
Step 8 (7 min)
Play the music video and students comment on it to close the activity.
