How to Teach English with This ESL Song Lesson Plan: Instructions

Step 1 (7 min)

Ask students to work in pairs and talk about the quotes below (meaning, if they agree or disagree and their favorite and why). After some time, students share with the whole class.

1- “Trust begins and ends with the truth.” — UnknowN

2- “Lies move fast, but truth takes time.” — Mark Twain

3- “Trust is like an eraser. It gets smaller after each mistake.” — Unknown

Step 2 ( 5 min)

Tell students they are going to watch the music video for the song they are going to work with: Trustfall. Ask them if they know the song, if they do not, ask them what kind of song they think it’s going to be based on the title (eg. slow, fast, happy, sad), and also what things they expect to see in the video, and have them share their guesses.

Step 3 (6 min)

Tell them they are going to watch the video to check their guesses and also Have them pay close attention to the lyrics and the visuals to answer the question: What is the message that the singer is trying to convey? and play the video.

Step 4 (5- 7 min)

After watching, ask students to pair up and discuss what they understood about the video’s message. After a while, have each pair share their interpretation with the rest of the class.

Step 5 (10 min)

Hand out the worksheet with the crosswords and the lyrics of the song. The exercise one is a crosswords exercise, you can have a competition to see who can solve it first! (see answers in the instructions.pdf)

Step 6 (10 min)

Exercise two. Students listen to the song and fill the blanks with the words they found in exercise one. (answers in the instruction.pdf.)
