DESCRIPTION:

In this new song-based lesson plan for English language teaching, students preparing for the Cambridge English First and First For Schools Exam B2, can have some fun and inspiration to practice the part 3 of the Use Of English Exam: Word Formation through song extracts by NEFFEX.

OBS: This lesson plan was made for ONLINE TEACHING, but it can be modified for face-to-face instruction, as well.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS LESSON PLAN:

– Provide an opportunity for students to practice word formation through song extracts
– Encourage students to work collaboratively by comparing answers and coming to a final group decision
– Challenge students to be attentive listeners and to improve their understanding of word formation through a competition with points awarded for correct answers.

STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLAN

Step 1 (5 min)

Ask them what their favorite kind of music is, etc. Tell your students that in this class they are going to work with songs and practice Use of English part 3 with the lyrics.

Step 2 (5 min)

Review the instructions to do Paper 1: Reading and Use of English PART 3 Word formation:

Read the text, Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line.

Step 3 (3 min)

Ask students to get a blank sheet of paper to write down their answers.

There are 4 short song extracts in the video, with 2 gaps each one, and the students have about 30s to answer each song questions. You can pause the video to give them more time if necessary.

After each song extract, the students will have a chance to listen to the song to check their answers, but do not confirm their answers just now.

Step 4 (10 min)

Divide students into small groups, and put them in BREAKOUT ROOMS. They are going to compare their answers and come to a final group decision on the answers.

Step 5 (5 -10 min)

Back to the main room. A student from each group (the captain) will send you (privately) the answers for the first extract in the CHAT BOX. Award points to the right ones. Then, do the same with the other extracts. The group with more right answers is the winner!
